Favorite Nearby Spots (food, drinks, shopping, lodging, etc.):

  • Haywood Country Club - New outdoors-y type dive bar just a block or so down (and across) the street from the Mothlight.  Features a sprawling patio-like atmosphere, crafted cocktails and live music on select nights. Food trucks may wander in to the lot as well. 662 Haywood Rd.  Open daily 3pm-2am.
  • Fleetwood's - Part bar, part vintage shop, part wedding chapel (yes, wedding chapel) this insititution of West Asheville has been hosting quickie weddings, comedy nights, karaoke, and live music since its inception. Whether you're wanting to get hitched, do some drunk shopping, or just chill out with a beer, Fleetwood's has it all. 496 Haywood Rd.  Open Sun, Wed, Thurs noon-10pm or later & Fri/Sat noon-midnight or later.
  • Twice Round  - Another, more traditional approach to vintage shopping can be found just a block east of the Mothlight at Twice Round.  Don't expect thrift store prices at this vintage joint, but you may find some treasures here that may have only before been told of in legend.  665 Haywood Rd. Open Mon-Sat 11:30am-5:30pm & Sun 10am-2:30pm
  • Zia Taqueria - You've heard of Tex-Mex? Well this is a slightly different take on cuisine coming from south of the Border, as it takes on some characteristics found in New Mexico style cooking.  So I guess this would be...New Mex-Mex? I don't know what to call it, but it sure is delicious.  And quick too!  521 Haywood Rd.  Open Sun-Wed 11am-10pm & Thurs-Sat 11am-11pm

Notes/Insights/Opinions/Tips:

Having a spacious bar with seating in the same room as the show going on -- all while being able to see it -- is a HUGE plus.  It's definitely one of the highlights of the room, as you feel as you are part of the show and the audience while also savoring the rare phenomenon of personal space at a concert.  The drinks are bangin' -- especially the Novak (get it with gin) – and the staff friendly and attentive.  Also, apparently if you show up past a certain point in the headliner's set, there is no charge at the door (which is cash only otherwise).  Bring a sticker for the bathroom, and make sure you eat before the show because all they have are Utz chips.
